The appointments during the Sacramento trip on Monday, May 18 and Tuesday, May 19, 2015 were discussed and the trip summarized.
The meeting with the California Water Resources Board was informative and they were generous with their time.
They expressed acknowledgement and concern that their communications with the general public about the drought needs improvement. They stressed that the emergency is this summer and cuts need to be made now for the upcoming months.
A majority of legislators agreed that AB 357 (Chiu) predictable scheduling mandate is very poorly written and although well intentioned will likely not pass.
Meetings with Assembly Members Mark Steinorth and Chad Mayes were productive. Both are moderate republicans that know how to cross the political aisle. Assembly Member Steinorth enjoyed joining the group for dinner Monday evening expressed his appreciation for the invitation.
Senator Roth was appreciative of Inland Action support of the Senators bill (SB 229) which would appropriate funds for 10 Superior Court judgeships. All agreed that there are many challenges to get all the support needed.
June Clark, Deputy Legislative Secretary expressed that she believes that there is little likelihood that any funds would be appropriated for judgeships right now.
The meeting with Senator Mike Morrell was tense and unusually awkward. Chairman Mark Kaenel spoke with him the following day. The Senator expressed his appreciation for the follow-up call and stated that he values his relationship with Inland Action and will continue to work with the group going forward.
Meeting adjourned at 8:34a.m.
