Minutes

 

Present: Deborah Barmack, Carole Beswick, Ann Bryan, Matthew Buck, Ken Coate, Kevin Dyerly, Jill Eaton, Erik Johnson, Mark Kaenel, Al Karnig, Lowell King, Pam Langford, Temetry Lindsey, Sue McKee, John Mirau, Bev Powell, Jan Remm, Kristine Scott, Paul Shimoff, Phil Waller, Jan Weder, Stan Weisser and Ray Wolfe.

Announcements:   1) Funding for ten Judgeships was removed from the State budget during negotiations.

City of San Bernardino: Al Karnig reported that the City has furnished budgetary materials for the Bankruptcy Judge to review.  Some 70% of the budget will go to Public Safety and will be difficult to sustain.  The City is receiving bids for outsourcing fire services with the leading competitors coming from the private sector. The City Council continues to work harmoniously.

John Mirau reported that Dr. Richard Hart, 1st Vice Chairman and Lou Monville, 2nd Vice Chairman have indicated they are not able to commit the time that is needed to serve as Chair of Inland Action in the upcoming years.  The Executive Committee has asked Mark Kaenel to remain Chairman and serve one more year.  Chairman Kaenel expressed gratitude for this vote of confidence and has accepted the extension of his term of service.

 

Greg Devereaux has received the Regional Leadership award from the Southern California Chapter of American Society of Public Administration.  A letter of congratulations will be sent to Greg Devereaux.

 

State Appointments

Congratulations were expressed to Stan Weisser for his re-appointment to the State Board of Pharmacy. Dr. Al Karnig has applieda governor’s appointment to the First Five Commission.  Sample letters of support for his appointment will be drafted for use both individuals, groups and legislators. Dr. Dev Gnanadev has been re-appointed to the State Medical Board.  A letter of congratulations will be sent. Jane Carney has applied for a seat on the California State University Board of Trustees.  Regional support from both San Bernardino and Riverside Counties is expected.   M/S/P: A letter of support will be sent to the Governor’s office.

 

A vacancy remains on the SB County 28th Agricultural Association-County Fair Board.  Discussion of possible candidates ensued.

 

Advocacy Dates    

Members were asked to notify Inland Action if they know of advocacy trip dates in 2016 scheduled by other groups.  The Monday Morning Group will go to Sacramento January 31-Feb 2, 2016 and will travel to Washington, D.C. April 18-21, 2016.

The Inland Action reception earlier this year honoring Bruce Varner & Lou Monville was very successful.  The membership was asked if the group should have a reception where Inland Action presents an award to a deserving individual.  Discussion ensued.  Chairman Kaenel and members present agreed that an ad hoc committee will be created to address the specifics of such an event.

 

The UCR Center for Sustainable Suburban Development has proposed to the Monday Morning Group and Inland Action a Visioning process for the San Bernardino/Riverside region.  Both Counties have been in discussion regarding the process and an outside consultant will be hired.  If agreed upon, it is expected that the two counties would pay the majority of the $125,000 consultant’s cost.  Members discussed Inland Actions operating budget and reserve account.  Individuals were asked to consider financial support of the project.
