The ability to effectively communicate during a disaster and understanding of its rapidly evolving dynamics is critical to surviving a catastrophic event. We rely heavily on cellular communication to keep us aware, but what happens when the system goes down or is overloaded and locks-up during a disaster like a forest fire or major earthquake? The ability to communicate among ourselves or with emergency responders may be the difference between surviving the disaster or not. Undoubtedly, many people who perished in the tragic Lahaina fire in Maui, Hawaii, recently would have survived if they understood the gravity of the situation and the direction and speed of the fire that took their lives. Jim Bueermann will discuss the use of General Mobile Radio System (GMRS) radios as a way for people to be more aware and self-sufficient during emergencies.
