M/S/P: Minutes from May 13, 2014
The appointments during the Sacramento trip on Monday, May 19 and Tuesday, May 20, 2014 were discussed and the trip summarized.
Judgeship funding was discussed in all meetings and in general, those with whom the group met were supportive. Direction from June Clark suggested that Inland Action might get some positive resolution by contacting the Judicial Council directly.
There has been some preliminary good news to support repeal of the 11.3% cut to the Cal Grant Award. Both the Senate and now the Assembly Budget Sub Committees have voted unanimously to repeal the cut. The next obstacle is to ensure the Governor keeps the repeal in the final budget, as he has the ability to line-item veto certain budget expenditures. Inland Action will send a letter of support to the Governor.
The following update was reported via e-mail on May 22, 2014 by Pam Langford.
The hearing of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance staff recommended, and the membership agreed, to approve a $100 million General Fund augmentation to the CSU over the Governor’s proposed 2014-15 budget. (The Subcommittee also approved another $100 million for the UC.) The funding recommendation was approved unanimously with provisional budget language requirements.
Although those with whom we met gave no specific support, general support was expressed for a State Water Bond and a regional approach to water and the environment.
Suggestions for future trips include holding a meeting with lobbyists’ at the beginning of the trip to get a read on hot button items.
Meeting adjourned at 8:23a.m.
