Headquartered in San Bernardino, Stater Bros. Markets is celebrating nearly 84 years of serving Southern California families. Today, Stater Bros. operates 169 supermarkets in seven counties and has over 16,000 employees with annual sales of over $4 billion. Future expansion is planned.
Stater Bros. is rooted in the American tradition and proudly celebrates a rich legacy of service to this great nation. Tracing its beginnings back to a small grocery store in Yucaipa, twin brothers and World War II veterans Cleo and Leo Stater purchased the original Stater Bros. Market from W.A. Davis with a $600 down payment. During the Great Depression, Stater Bros. officially opened for business on August 17, 1936.
In 1981, Stater Bros. late Executive Chairman Jack H. Brown, a proud Navy veteran born on Flag Day took the helm of Stater Bros. Under Brown’s leadership the Company grew to become the largest privately owned Supermarket Chain in Southern California and the largest private employer in both Riverside and San Bernardino counties. He served on the Inland Action Board from 1988-1993. Brown passed away in 2016.
Stater Bros. Corporate Offices, Distributing Center and Support Facilities total 2.3 million sq. ft., operates at the site of the former Norton Air Force base. The Distribution Center opened in 2007 and is the largest under-one-roof facility in America’s vast supermarket industry. The roof line for the complex measures 45 ft. high with 40 ft. high ceilings, allowing product to be stacked up to 38 ft. high for expedient and efficient product shipping and receiving. The Distribution Center has 250 docks to accommodate the incoming and outgoing traffic.
