The Metropolitan Water District (MWD) of Southern California is a regional wholesaler and largest supplier of treated water in the United States. It is a cooperative of fourteen cities and eleven municipal water districts and one county water authority that provides water to nineteen million people in its 5,200-square-mile service area. MWD was created by an act of the California Legislature in 1928, primarily to build and operate the Colorado River Aqueduct. MWD became the first contractor to the State Water Project in 1960.
Randy A. Record is the Chairman of Metropolitan Water Districts 38-member Board of Directors, representing each of the district’s 26 member agencies. Each member agency is represented by one or more directors based on the assessed property valuation of its jurisdiction. The board is responsible for establishing and administering Metropolitan’s policies and upholding the articles in the MWD Act. Record is a past president of the Association of California Water Agencies, He was elected to Eastern Municipal Water District’s board of directors in January 2001 and has served two terms as Eastern’s board president.
